Bordelais, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
Barrau de Markays states that since the beginning of the war, the French have withheld from him his land in Bazas and Langon, and elsewhere in the Bazadais, worth £40 sterling. He asks that he might be granted land to the same value from the lands forfeited by rebels in the Bordelais; and that he might have a writ to the Constable of Bordeaux for this.
Nature of endorsement
The king has ordained that certain great people will be sent quickly with full power to do the things which are appropriate and profitable for himself and his subjects; and the king will order them that, when they have informed themselves of his losses, they are to give him such recompense as is appropriate and as might reasonably suffice.
Note
Tentatively dated on the guard to c. 1340, with reference to a grant of lands to the petitioner, in compensation for his service, on 4 August 15 Edward III (1341) (Carte, vol. I p.108; m. 6 of C 61/53). But from the content the petition seems to be earlier, from the aftermath of the war of St Sardos.
