SC 8/287/14314
Date
[? c. 1370-? c. 1390]
Description
Petitioners
John Tornegold.
Name(s)
Tornegold, John
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
John Tornegold states that he had an arrest against the town of La Rochelle by due process, for nine years and more before the peace was confirmed at Calais before the Earl of Cornwall. He was therefore at Calais when the peace was confirmed, and, at the command of the Chancellor, he showed his process to the burgesses of La Rochelle, and, on six days' notice, before certain burgesses of London and in the presence of a public notary, William Cirice, knight, answered him on behalf of himself and his companions, that they would give him satisfaction when the king had appointed a captain there. He therefore sued to them again, but they excused themselves with empty words. He requests a remedy of the king's grace, that he might have recovery by means of arrest, or that the king might take all his right upon himself and give him such recompense as pleases him, of his special grace.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue to the Chancellor, and he will have such commands as ought to be sufficient.
Places mentioned
La Rochelle, [Poitou, France]
Calais, [France]
London.
People mentioned
[? Edward of Woodstock], Earl of Cornwall
burgesses of La Rochelle
burgesses of London
William (Guilhem) Cirice, knight.
Note
The reference to the 'peace of Calais' clearly dates this to some point after the treaty of Bretigny of October 1360. Orders relating to these events were enrolled on the Gascon Roll on 20 January 1361 (C 61/73, m. 1) and 8 July 1368 (C 61/81, m. 5), suggesting that the petition dates to some point during that period.
