Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/287/14306
Date
[1336 - ? 1345]
Description
Petitioners
Oliver (Olivier, Oliber) de Burdeaux (Bordeaux, Bordeu).
Name(s)
de Burdeaux (Bordeaux, Bordeu), Oliver (Olivier, Oliber)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Oliver de Burdeaux makes three requests:1) He states that the king gave him the land called Labenne for term of life, to hold as Loup Burgon held it, and that he was in seisin until he was expelled when the king gave it to the people of Bayonne. He asks that he might have the value of this land assigned to him annually from the prevote of Bayonne, for term of life or until he recovers Labenne.2) He states that he holds the prevote of Bayonne at farm, and asks that he might have an allowance in his farm for a custom paid by every ship entering the port of Bayonne, which has recently been given to the people of Bayonne.3) He states that he had the keeping of Bayonne castle for a term of five years, and has now been granted it for another five years. He has spent a lot of money on improvements to the castle, but there are still many faults to be corrected. He requests orders to the Seneschal and Constable to give him an allowance in the farm of the prevote for the work he has done.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first point: orders are to be given to inquire into the value; and the king is to be informed. With regard to the second point: the damage that he will have because of the grant of this custom is also to be inquired into. And with regard to the third point: the expenses that he has incurred and the faults that are to be corrected are to be examined, and for how much they can be corrected.
Places mentioned
Labenne, [Gascony, France]
Bayonne, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Loup Burgon (Loup Bergunh) [de Burdeaux (Bordeaux, Bordeu)].
Note
Labenne was granted to Oliver de Burdeaux on 9 October 9 Edward III (1335) (m. 1 of C 61/47 and Carte, vol. I p.82), and to the people of Bayonne on 20 November 10 Edward III (1336), (m. 1 of C 61/48 and Carte, vol. I p.83). This petition must therefore date from after November 1336. There are instructions to inquire into the costs incurred by the petitioner for the repair of Bayonne castle dated 21 January 18 Edward III (1345) (Carte, vol. I p.117; m.1 of C 61/56); this would therefore be a likely date for this petition, although it seems to be rather a long time after Labenne was taken from the petitioner. The hand, however, would seem to suggest this date.
