Addressees

Nature of request
[This petition is damaged and partly illegible] The petitioners state that their goods have been arrested at London, at the suit of Peter Dartiguelonque and Arnold de Seint Martyn, as associates of William de Saut, whereas they are not his associates and never have been. They ask that John de Sandale and Thomas de Cauntebruge, the king's clerks, might inquire into the truth of this, [and examine] their letters of testimony under the seal of the community of Bayonne, and return their goods to them. They ask that the truth of the wider matter concerning Peter Dartiguelonque and his companions might be inquired into by good merchants of Bayonne, and state that he will find from the bailiffs of Sandwich and others that they have had restitution.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be issued to the collectors of the custom in London who have the goods or letters mentioned by the present petition in their hand, at the king's command, that if they can establish that the letters and goods contained in them clearly belong to the petitioners, they are to deliver to them the said letters and goods, taking a pledge that William de Saut does not and should not have anything in the debts contained in the aforesaid letters.
Places mentioned

People mentioned

Arnold (Arnaut) de Seint Martyn (St Martin)
William (Guilhem) de Saut
John de Sandale, king's clerk
Thomas de Cauntebruge (Cambridge), king's clerk.
Note
Tentatively dated on the basis of the hand and language, and the reference to John de Sandale and Thomas de Cauntebruge. They are often mentioned together in the petitions from 1305 found in SC 8/291 and 292, which would suggest this as a possible date for this petition, but there are other mentions of them. CPR 1307-13 p.516 is a bond made to John Squirel on 8 December 1312 for payment to him of wages from the war in Gascony in the reign of Edward I, by account made between him and John de Sandale and Thomas de Cauntebruge; it would seem to suggest that the account was made in the 1290s, but is delivered by the hands of John de Sandale. Thomas de Cauntebruge, going to Gascony on the king's service, is granted a protection on 15 September 1312 (CPR 1307-13 p.509), and again on 1 July 1315 (CPR 1313-17 p.304), and on 17 September 1320 (CPR 1317-21 p.504). John de Sandale was Chancellor 1314-1318 and Bishop of Winchester 1316-1319, when he died. This gives a date for this petition of c. 1290-c. 1314.
