Content
Folios 226-227. Letter from William Power, District Auditor to the Poor Law Board, responding to their letter of 13 March 1857 with regard to the non-settled account between the Southwell Union and Worksop Union. He notes he has always found the bills and receipts correctly entered in the non-resident account for the Southwell Union, and always marked the bills so that they could not be presented again. He stresses that he is not the auditor for the Worksop Union and he cannot report on any irregularities in their non-settled account. He notes that 2 cheques dated May 1850 and July 1854 appear not to have been accounted for in their statement; and that the accounts for September and December 1855 have not been sent - amounting to £13:5:6.He states that if the late decision of the case between the Wycombe Union and Eton Union is correctly reported, then the Southwell Union cannot legally pay the 1855 bills. He intends to write to the clerk to point this out, as he does not want the ratepayers to blame him for being charged for what they are not legally bound to pay. He adds that his last audit of the Southwell Union non-settled account in September 1856 agreed to a farthing with the ledger viz Thomas Pawson, Relieving Officer - £15:0:3¼d and George Saxelby, Relieving Officer £15:12:0 = ledger balance of £30 12s and 3¼d.Annotated, Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley], 17 March and 20 March 1857, to acknowledge and put by.
