Folios 213-214. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to Mr Jackson, Mr Truswell, Mr Stenton, Southwell Union guardians. The Baord state they have considered their appeal against the surcharge of £1:19:0 made by William Power, District Auditor, after the half year audit ending September 1856. In view of the circumstances leading to this situation, the Board believe the auditor's decision was lawful and he acted within his duties, and they are not prepared to remit the surcharge. However, as the fault appears to lie with the negligence of duty of the relieving officer of the Newark Union, the Board will give their opinion to that union that he should repay the surcharge to the guardians.Folio 214v.
