Folios 211-212. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to John Kirkland, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union. They acknowledge receipt of letters of 3 and 5 February 1857 regarding the case of Elizabeth Duckenfield and state the Board have reached decisions regarding the relieving officer of the Newark Union who paid the supposed relief to Duckenfield, and the appeal bought by the 3 guardians, Mr Jackson, Mr Truswell and Mr Stenton against the surcharge made by the district auditor in this case. A copy of the letter sent to these gentlemen conveying that decision is enclosed to the guardians [not included]. Also encloses a copy of letter to the Newark Union expressing the Board's opinion that the relieving officer should pay the Southwell Union the sum in question [not included]. With regard to any prosecution of Mr Allwood, the Board feel that the guardians of the Southwell Union should consult their legal advisor as to the evidence for a charge of obtaining money under false pretences, and if proven should prosecute.
