- Folios 200-201. Letter from John Kirkland, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Board. He acknowledges receipt of their letter of 17 January 1857 and includes Kirkland's enquiries into the case of Elizabeth Duckenfield ofOmpton. On a visit to North Searle, Kirkland discovered that a relieving officer of the Newark Union had regularly left 1/6 weekly relief with a pauper named Betty Wells over a period of 3 years, and that Thomas Allwood (76 years) regularly called for it. Allwood admitted he received it for his own use and had no means of repaying it. From Wells, Kirkland found the relieving officer never made any enquiries of Duckenfield or her whereabouts.The Southwell guardians wish to know if the Board want a prosecution to be made against Allwood, and if so, by whom and at whose expense.
