Content
Folios 198-199. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to George Harrison, Clerk to the Guardians of the Newark Union. They acknowlede receipt of his letter of 30 January 1857 and the enclosed letter from Mr Ouzman, Relieving Officer, relating to the case of Elizabeth Duckenfield. The Board point out that as it was the legal duty of the relieving officer to visit the pauper from time to time, it was his neglect to do so that led to the relief being paid after she had left his district. They are, therefore, of the opinion that these payments were illegal and that these facts were not known to the district auditor at the time of the audit. They suggest that Mr Ouzman should now repay the sum of £1:19:0 to the Treasurer of the Southwell Union; this being the sum in question recharged to the 3 guardians of that union. The Board request the Newark Union should see that Ouzman does this and inform them when it is paid.
