Content
Folios 195-197. Letter from George Harrison, Clerk to the Guardians of the Newark Union, to the Poor Law Board. He acknowledges receipt of their letter of 17 January 1857 regarding the case of Elizabeth Duckenfield. The letter was discussed at the guardian's meeting of 27 December 1856, and they wish to refer the Board to their letter of 3 December 1856 and to state that to their knowledge no new circumstances have arisen. Therefore the guardians have nothing further to say on the matter. Also enclosed is the letter of explanation from James Ouzman, Relieving Officer. In December 1849 Duckenfield was ordered to receive 1/6 weekly at North Searle. As she lived a mile from the village, she asked his predecessor, Mr Hardy, to leave the money with Elizabeth Wells, whose daughter, an 'idiot', received relief from Searle. Duckenfield authorised Thomas Allwood to receive the money from Wells. This continued until 11 September 1856 when Ouzman was informed by the North Searle guardians that she now lived in Sheffield [Yorkshire West Riding] and was receiving relief from the Southwell Union. He reported the case on 23 September 1856, and although he admits neglect in not visiting the pauper, which he deeply regrets, he claims that as no one told him of any change in Duckenfield's circumstances, he had felt confident all was correct. He suggests the clerk for the Southwell Union should have informed him of the changes. He pleads his good record as relieving officer, and though admits to neglect, hopes the Board accepts that he is not involved in any fraud.
