Folios 186-187. Letter from John Kirkland, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Board. He acknowledges receipt of the Board's letter of 17 March 1857 and forwards an appeal signed by 3 guardians; Mr Jackson, Richard Truswell and Mr Stenton, against the district auditor's surcharge of £1:19:0. Also states that he has received directions from the guardians to ascertain whether a fraud has been committed in this matter.Includes the written appeal dated 20 January 1857 and signed by the 3 guardians against the surcharge of £1:19:0 made by William Power, District Auditor, in his audit accounts for the half year ended September 1856. They ask the Board to consider the clerk's statements in his letter of 6 January 1857, and believe that it will be seen as 'fair and equitable' to remit the surcharge.Annotated note, 'WGL'[William Golden Lumley], suggests this is acknowledged and promised attention, and to send a copy to the auditor for his attention.
