Content
Folios 77-78. Letter from Thomas Pawson, Relieving Officer, Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Board. This relates to the 'lunatic' William Noble, and refers to an enclosed letter [not included] received from the medical attendant of the Mickleover Asylum at Derby. He [Pawson] states that the issue is now a matter of principle to him. If the Poor Law Board believes he acted wrongly, then he is willing to sacrifice all the expenses owed to him. If they feel he acted rightly they should acquit him of all blame. He claims he is indifferent to the payment of the expenses, £1:1:6, plus 10/6 for the surgeon, Mr Calvert's fee, but 'as a Matter of course' they are included in this issue. He states he would have preferred to place the lunatic in Nottingham Asylum where the chairman and vice chairman are visitors, and conscious of his duty to economise, to save 2/- per week.Annotated note, 20 May 1856, refers to earlier minutes.
