Folios 74-75. Letter from Thomas Pawson, Relieving Officer, Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Board. He is replying to their letter of 12 May 1856 and responding to the enclosed copy of the letter of the clerk to the guardians of the Southwell Union. He states that the guardians instructed him at their 4 March meeting to have William Noble examined by a medical officer without loss of time. The next day a surgeon did this and considered he should be taken into care, and via a magistrate, a certificate was issued for his admittance to an asylum as soon as possible. The clerk informed him that Nottingham Asylum was full, so on 5 March he wrote asking for admittance at the Derby Asylum and next morning took Noble to Mickleover Asylum in Derbyshire. Until this time Noble was in the care of his brother who could manage him better than anyone else. He regrets he has displeased the guardians by believes he has acted in their best interests and Noble's. He has only charged for travelling expenses and refreshments and adds he is sending as requested the order for payment. There are detailed annotated notes to this letter regarding the details of the expenses claimed.17 May 1856; to return document and states there appears to be a mistake in the Order of Justices, which directs the guardians to pay the surgeon, Mr Calvert, 10/6 and Pawson £1:12:0. However, the file of particulars shows that the sum of £1:12:0 includes the charge of 10/6 paid as Mr Calvert's fee; therefore Pawson should be paid £1:1:6. 20 May 1856; note to Mr Lumley that the order does not appear to direct payment of the fee to the relieving officer, but refers to him indirectly as the person who incurs the expenses.
