Content
Folios 68-69. Letter from Thomas Marriott, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union to the Poor Law Board. He acknowledges receipt of their letter of 14 April 1856, regarding the account of Thomas Pawson, Relieving Officer, of his dealing with William Noble, a lunatic pauper. In trying to understand Pawson's motives for removing the pauper to Derby Lunatic Asylum, the guardians asked the medical officer for his opinion and were told the man was 'of weak mind' only, not dangerous, and there was no urgency to remove him. It is claimed Pawson did not consult the medical officer as requested. The guardians also reject Pawson's claim he was acting according to an Act of Parliament, responding to an immediate needy situation, when in fact he knew it was not an urgent case. The guardians think it important that lunatics are not removed from the county asylum, partly because expenses at Derby are much greater than at Nottingham. They feel Pawson should be reprimanded and pay the difference in expenses between taking the pauper to Derby instead of Nottingham Asylum. There are 2 annotated notes. 2 May 1856 to Mr Lumley: to send a copy to Pawson and request he sends the 'Order of Justice' made to him for his claim to expenses; and 7 May 1856 from 'WLG': will do this, but does not feel that Pawson has acted illegally, and the guardians cannot curtail this expenditure.
