- Folio 64. Letter from Thomas Marriott, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union to the Poor Law Board, containing the entire contents of the letter from the J B Warwick, Medical Officer, to the guardians. He [Warwick] claims he employs a competent midwife to deal with ordinary confinement cases and he attends at the occurrence of the slightest difficulty. He states that no woman has died of childbirth whilst entrusted to him. This plan, which has gone on for many years without objection, allows him to attend his other patients outside the workhouse. If he was not allowed to employing and assistant many babies might be born without any medical assistance at all. He pays the midwife 5/- and keeps the remaining 5/- for himself for the difficult cases and aftercare he provides.
