Folio 63. Letter from Thomas Marriott, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union to the Poor Law Board. He refers to enclosed letters between him [the clerk] to the medical officer and the medical officer to the chairman of the union [not included], referring to cases of labour and confinement in the workhouse. The guardians do not think it desirable that a midwife is employed for every case and ask the Board for their advice on the matter. There is an annotated note, 2 May 1856, to Mr Manwaring suggesting a letter be sent to the guardians referring to Article 199 which states a medical officer should personally attend when able; and Article 200 which states that when he is not able to attend he should make sure a legally qualified medical practitioner should go as his substitute. Therefore, the medical officer cannot employ a midwife at the workhouse for childbirth cases.
