Folios 59-61. From Mr Manwaring, Poor Law Inspector, to [the Poor Law Board]. Pre-printed form for the report following his visit to the Southwell workhouse on 15 April 1856; his previous visit was on 19 September 1855. There are no problems reported, although particular mention is made of the ward for the sick and to the dampness of the floor owing to it being positioned over the washhouse. The report also refers to the guardians concern about the medical officer's use of a midwife to deliver babies of women in the workhouse. They are to investigate this at their next meeting. Includes a copy of a letter from Joseph Thompson, Farmer, Kirton, near Ollerton to Poor Law Board, dated 21 April 1856; on behalf of several Kirton parishioners regarding 4 acres of land belonging to the poor for 27 years but which has now been given by the tennant to the overseers of the poor. They want the Poor Law Board to order the overseers to let it by auction to the highest bidder, or divide into gardens to make double rent. He fears the overseers will let it to a private person for some 'underhanded work'.There are annotated notes, 24-26 April; they do not think the Poor Law Board has any jurisdiction. They refer him to the Charity Commissions.
