Various types of bonds and recognizances were filed in the Queen's Remembrancer's Department as surety by officers of state, merchants entering into government contracts (often for supply of goods to the armed forces), merchants exporting goods and thus liable to Customs bonds, by tax collectors, and by sureties for litigants. This series contains bail bonds, contract bonds, Customs bonds, lunacy bonds and various other kinds of bonds and recognizances, including one from W E Gladstone, as master and worker of the Mint. There is also a register of bonds, 1707-1883.
