Description

Warrants under the royal sign manual, 1852 to 1956, including some pre-dating the establishment of the Court of Protection under the Lunacy Act 1890, addressed to the Lord Chancellor, Master of the Rolls, lords justices of appeal in Chancery, and justices of appeal, investing them with jurisdiction in respect of the persons and estates of those of unsound mind. There is also a series of general commissions under the great seal, 1891 to 1928, empowering Masters in Lunacy to hold inquisitions, etc.
