Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/338/E1239
Date
[1305-1306]
Description
Petitioners
Party of the people of all the towns of Gascony: Bordeaux, St Macaire, Langon, La Reole, Marmande, Agen and other places.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners complain of Aymeric, formerly lieutenant of the castellan of Bordeaux, and Ribau, his lieutenant and of the trespasses and great grievances committed by them against the poor people, retaining goods and refusing to render them. They request that it be commanded to the Haverings by letter that they enquire of the truth of this, and they will find that they have built fine houses and bought other inheritances from the king's money that they have taken wrongfully and from the people of the country.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux that they call the parties before them and let as full and speedy justice be done as they are able.

John de Havering, seneschal of Gascony

Note
The petition is dated to 1305-1306 as this petition seems to be part of an original file of Gascon petitions - SC 8/338/E1217-SC 8/338/E1260 - for which SC 8/338/E1228 seems to have been the cover petition. The dating of this group of documents is arrived at by the possibility of more closely dating several of the petitions in this group, and these are noted when necessary. In addition, almost all of the petitions bear the old PRO references to Diplomatic Documents 1542 and 1548. The petition can possibly be more precisely dated to c. 1305, though the guard note dates the petition to 1305-1307 based a reference in the Gascon Rolls whose relevance is not entirely clear (Roles Gascons, vol. III, no. 4692).
Related material

The petition belongs to a probable original file consisting of SC 8/338/E1217- SC 8/338/E1260 of which SC 8/338/E1228 was probably the cover petition judging from its endorsement, see SC 8/338/E1228
