Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/338/E1230
Date
[1305-1306]
Description
Petitioners
William Ishak, burgess late of Bordeaux; Sage Ishak, wife of William Ishak.
Name(s)
Ishak; Ishak, William; Sage
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Ishaks request that they be granted for their losses and damages a certain sum on the petit customs of Bordeaux which is called 'le shak' thus that they are able to sustain themselves and their household, or if the king prefers, money to be paid at Bordeaux from the issues of Gascony as the king has made to others of Gascony in restoration of their damages. They have loyally served the king and his Gascon ministers without wages as is attested by the earl of Lincoln, and were ejected from Bordeaux by the French to their great damage in money, houses and rent, and wines which have been taken and or destroyed.
Nature of endorsement
The king has ordained that the seneschal of Gascony and constable of Bordeaux should ordain from the farms and bailles just as they consider is most profitable for the king.
Places mentioned
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Henry de Lacy], Earl of Lincoln.
Note
The petition is dated to 1305-1306 as this petition seems to be part of an original file of Gascon petitions - SC 8/338/E1217-SC 8/338/E1260 - for which SC 8/338/E1228 seems to have been the cover petition. The dating of this group of documents is arrived at by the possibility of more closely dating several of the petitions in this group, and these are noted when necessary. In addition, almost all of the petitions bear the old PRO references to Diplomatic Documents 1542 and 1548. The petition can possibly be more precisely dated to c. 1305 as the petition seems likely to relate closely to an entry in the Gascon Rolls that might be a response to the petition, and which dates to October 1304 (Roles Gascons, vol. III, no. 4626). The guard note suggests that this entry might be to an earlier petition because the entry records that it is in response to a petition of the council.
Related material

The petition belongs to a probable original file consisting of SC 8/338/E1217- SC 8/338/E1260 of which SC 8/338/E1228 was probably the cover petition judging from its endorsement, see SC 8/338/E1228
