Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/338/E1221
Date
[1305-1306]
Description
Petitioners
Gentleman and other soldiers of Gascony.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The gentleman and soldiers request that the king in general give his letters that go to the seneschal of Gascony that none of the soldiers that have been on this side of the was be distrained for any reason for things done in the war of Gascony as the king gave and enfranchised those of his party of that that they were able to gain upon the king's enemy that they make their own.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the seneschal of Gascony that he observe the form of the peace.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France].
Note
The petition is dated to 1305-1306 as this petition seems to be part of an original file of Gascon petitions - SC 8/338/E1217-SC 8/338/E1260 - for which SC 8/338/E1228 seems to have been the cover petition. The dating of this group of documents is arrived at by the possibility of more closely dating several of the petitions in this group, and these are noted where necessary. In addition, almost all of the petitions bear the old PRO references to Diplomatic Documents 1542 and 1548. The dating is also appropriate as the petition seems to postdate the war and occupation of 1294-1303, and stems from the problems of adequately compensating those who had suffered losses during the war on both sides.
Related material

The petition belongs to a probable original file consisting of SC 8/338/E1217- SC 8/338/E1260 of which SC 8/338/E1228 was probably the cover petition judging from its endorsement, see SC 8/338/E1228
