Reference
SC 8/338/E1212
Date
[? 1485]
Description
Petitioners
Giles Martynez (Martinez) of Biscay.
Name(s)
Martynez (Martinez), Giles
Addressees
King and lords of his council.
Nature of request
Martynez states that he has presented letters of request from the king of Castile concerning two ships of the petitioner that were robbed. Cole has one within the last few months and the king understands that no remedy as yet can be had. The other ship was taken by Petyte and the petitioner has been unable to have restoration despite letters of request from the king, but now Taylor has the ship and is in London. Martynez requests that Taylor is commanded to appear before the king and council so that he may have restoration of his ship and goods, considering how the petitioner is totally undone and has no recourse for help but to the king.
Nature of endorsement
Giles Martynez against John Taylor.
Places mentioned
Biscay (Vizcaya), [Spain]
Sandwich, [Kent]
Fowey, [Cornwall]
Topsham, [Devon]
London.
People mentioned
King of Castile
John Cole of Sandwich
Matthew Petyte of Fowey
John Taylour (Taylor) of Topsham.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1485 as a response to a petition of the petitioner can be found in the patent rolls dated to 8 March 1485, but as all the surrounding petitions date to 1480, and the response in the patent rolls does not precisely fit the request, it is not entirely certain that the petition referred to in the patent rolls is the same petition (CPR 1476-85, p. 544). That being said, the petition does not have the response on the face as the petitions of 1480 have, so that this could well be a slightly later intruder into petitions of 1480.
