Nature of request
The mayor and commonalty state that it has been commanded by various writs that no one carry victuals out of the realm by which the enemies are sustained. Afterwards came out of Chancery to various people to carry a great deal of beer and other victuals to Holland and Zeeland, and into other lands, and men regularly buy licences to carry ale and other victuals out of the country into foreign lands to the great dearth of corn and malt and to the impoverishment of the realm. The mayor and commonalty request that the king and council will be advised of this, and will restrain such commands, and that writs be delivered out of Chancery to the bailiffs of Lynn that they should not suffer any ale or other victuals to be carried out of the town or haven as there is not sufficient for the sustenance of the country nor the king.
Nature of endorsement
At Lincoln the bailiffs of Lynn were commanded that they are not to permit any ale to leave the town to foreign parts by virtue of the king's grant within contained.

The petition is dated to c. 1316 because licences were being granted from 1314-1316, and measures were being taken concerning the export of victuals in 1315 and 1316 (CPR 1313-17, pp. 178, 380, 418, 420).
