Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of Bristol.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The commonalty complain that the sheriff of Gloucester at the morrow of Hilary last past falsely and maliciously, by the procurement of malefactors, returned into the Exchequer to a writ that came to him that Taverner and others had taken to them all the commonalty of Bristol by force and arms and would not allow the execution of a writ of the king to levy from the commonalty certain sum of money from the chattels of certain felons, though the sheriff did not come, or order to the town for such execution to be made, and this they are prepared to put to view by whatever means the court wishes to award. In the meantime some of them have been imprisoned in the king's prison of Bristol, and their friends have sued to have their outlawries pronounced against them repealed as they were made without due process.
Nature of endorsement
They should sue before the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer against the sheriff, and have a remedy there concerning his false response.

Note
The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1307-c. 1320 on the basis of the hand. As most of the petitions that precede this one in this file are dated to around 1312-1315, it seems likely that this petitions is similarly dated.
