Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/334/E1134
Date
[? c. 1309]
Description
Petitioners
John Lomb of Lynn.
Name(s)
Lomb, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Lomb requests that the chancellor and treasurer be commanded to act as many of the town of Lynn are indicted of selling victuals to the king's enemies and upon which the king and council have ordained Ormysbi and Mountford to hear and determine these wrongs, but the bishop of Norwich, lord of the town, has been procured to allow those indicted to pass by fine and not by the pays which is against the will of the king, and those that are indicted are fine 40 or 60 pounds but have made £4,000, and those from whom the fines are levied are not culpable. Lomb dare not pursue the suit that he made for the king on this without aid of the council.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested before the king that the petitioner is of little truth and for such he is found and in business prosecuted by him, therefore it does not please the king that faith be ascribed to him in this part nor the matter be prosecuted any further.
Places mentioned
King's Lynn, [Norfolk].
People mentioned
William de Ormysbi, justice
John de Mutford (Mountford), justice
Bishop of Norwich
William de Briston
Robert de Mohaut.
Note
The petition is dated to? c. 1309 on the basis of the guard note reference to a patent roll reference to a complaint by the Bishop of Norwich of several individuals who had usurped his authority in Lynn (CPR 1307-13, p.240). However, this makes no reference to the petitioner, and its relationship to the petition is unclear, so the date must be considered as problematic. The hand is not inappropriate for a document of the date, though could be earlier.
