SC 8/334/E1133
Date
[1316]
Description
Petitioners
Simon de Wakefeld (Wakefield).
Name(s)
de Wakefeld (Wakefield), Simon
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Wakefeld requests that the king will restore him to good fame which he has lost by the false accusation made against him by Eston. Wakefeld has served the king and his father well and loyally for a great time in Yorkshire and elsewhere, and there came to Clipstone Eston who was attainted and condemned of all manner of office in the time of the king's father and also before Louth and his companions, and because of his enmity to the petitioner, he alleged to the king that the petitioner was attainted in the time of the king's father by which the king commanded the sheriff that the petitioner was not to be retained in the king's service to his great damage and dishonour.
Nature of endorsement
Although the petitioner is accused of the enormities mentioned in the petition, it is attested by some of the council present that the petitioner is not convicted of anything, and therefore it pleases the king that this assertion should be known by his writ patent to the recovery of his good name, and anyone wishing to receive him in his service should retain him as a faithful person, this evil rumour notwithstanding, especially as Meynil, former sheriff of Yorkshire, in whose service he was for sometime, has attested that the petitioner bore himself faithfully in the same.
Places mentioned
Yorkshire
Clipstone, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
Geoffrey de Eston
Hugh de Louthe (Louth)
Simon Warde, sheriff of York
Nicholas Meynil, late sheriff of York.
Note
The petition is dated to 1316 as a notification was issued in accordance with the response to this petition on 20 February 1316 (CPR 1313-17, p. 401). It is also made clear in the notification that the testimony referred to in the response, and presumably the petition as well date to the parliament held at Lincoln in January and February 1316.
