SC 8/334/E1132
Date
[c. 1307-c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Canons and ministers of the church of St Paul, London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The canons and ministers request remedy as they state that they rely for a great part of their sustenance upon corn and other victuals that come to the church by water from the parts of Essex and Kent, and people, of whom they are unknown, came and carried them away because of which the service of God and alms in the church are on the point of failure, the church being a foundation of the king and his ancestors.
Nature of endorsement
The king has great affection for the church of St Paul's, London and the ministers of the same, and therefore let the sheriffs of Essex and Kent be written to enquire of those malefactors, and to attach all those culpable by their bodies and have them coram rege at a certain day to answer to the dean and chapter of those trespasses.
Places mentioned
London
Essex
Kent.
Note
The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1307-c. 1320 in part on the hand, and also the reference to Edward I, as the late king. As most of the petitions that precede this one in this file are dated to around 1312-1315, it seems likely that this petitions is similarly dated.
