Description
Petitioners
Gerard Salvayn (Salvin).
Name(s)
Salvayn (Salvin), Gerard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Petition in two parts:]1) Gerard Salvayn states that he is in prison for certain trespasses of which he was convicted before Hugh de Louthier and his companions, justices appointed to inquire into, and to hear and determine, trespasses committed by him by colour of his office while he was sheriff of Yorkshire and escheator north of the Trent, and that he has sued to have the record and process of some of these judgments brought before the king so that he can show the errors they contain: and therefore asks that he might be released on mainprise until these errors have been examined.2) He requests that the justices assigned to hear such plaints specify a day that all those wishing to make a complaint for trespasses done by his office should come, and that after this day no further plaints be heard, as he has been sued for a year or more.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning to the first request, he should go to Chancery and obtain there a writ to make the records come if it seems good to him, and when he has done this he should show this before the council, and there it will be ordained in what manner he should come before the justices to sue his suit.2) Concerning to the second, let it be proclaimed in the country that all those who wish to complain of the petitioner come before the justices at a certain day assigned for these trespasses etc, provided that any who have material for complaint about this and do not come on that day, are not precluded from complaint by other means when they wish.
Places mentioned

People mentioned

Note
The petition is dated to 1316 as the first part is a duplicate of SC 8/193/9610 which was formerly enclosed with a warrant calendared in CCW 1244-1326 p.436, which is dated 27 February 1316. Gerard Salvayn was sheriff of Yorkshire between March 1311 and October 1314, and escheator north of the Trent between May 1308 and December 1309.
