Description (What the record is about)
-
- Petitioners
- William Swynford (Swinford).
- Name(s)
- Swynford (Swinford), William
- Addressees
- King and council.
- Nature of request
- Swynford requests remedy as he was tenant of part of the lands that were Fitz Drew's in Lincolnshire and paid to Burham fifty shillings which were assigned to his portion of the debt that was due in the Jewry to the king from Fitz Drew's lands for which Burham made him a tally, but Neville, the present sheriff has come and made grievous distraints for the same fifty shillings in Swynford's lands by summons of the Exchequer because Burham's account has still not been rendered in the Exchequer. He asks this because Burnham as sheriff has the power to make acquittances of things received for the king's use.
- Nature of endorsement
- Let it be commanded by writ of the great seal to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they make to come before them the heirs, executors and receivers of Thomas Burnham to make account for his time and to inform them on the acquittances which Swynford might wish to show before them for this payment, namely whether they are sufficient or not, and in the meantime he should have respite.

-
Note (Additional information about the record)
- The petition is dated to? 1312 as the petition refers to Thomas de Burnham as former sheriff of Lincolnshire, and the response refers to his heirs and executors, so that he must have been dead by the time of the petition, he last serving as sheriff from May 1309 to March 1310. The petition also refers to a John de Neville being sheriff at the time of the petition, and John de Neville of Stokes served in the office of sheriff from March 1312 to November 1313, and it seems likely that the petition dates to this term, though other John de Nevilles served as sheriff after this (List of Sheriffs, p. 78).
