de Middelton (Middleton), Robert

King and council.
Occupation
King's vadlet
Nature of request
Robert de Middelton requests that the King renew his grant to the petitioner of the manor of Cotes. His father Philip held the manor until disseised by Edmund, late Earl of Arundel. Philip sued a writ of novel disseisin, but the Earl of Arundel so threatened the jurors that they dared not attend any assize during his lifetime. After the Earl's death the manor was seised into the King's hand, and Philip petitioned the King at York for restitution of the manor whereupon he was granted a writ ordering Corbet and Weston to enquire into his right to the manor. They found that the manor was rightly his, but since Philip died shortly after, Robert asked the King to grant him the manor. At this time Mortimer seised the manor because the King had granted him the lands late of the Earl of Arundel in the March. Mortimer, by his great power, held the manor of Cotes until his death when his lands were seised into the King's hand.1)
Nature of endorsement
Before the King.2) As regards the disseisin made by Edmund, late Earl of Arundel, it cannot be tried or cleared without allowing his son, who is tenant of the manor, to answer because by common law he is heir.3) And as regards that which the King granted him by his charter, it seems to the council that the King should have regard for his service and make some reward to him.
