Reference
SC 8/330/E995
Date
[1307]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Abbotsbury.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Abbotsbury
Nature of request
The abbot shows that they hold of the king in chief making the service of one knight in all the king's wars, and for the last Scottish war he made a covenant with Gorges that he would acquit the abbot of the service. And afterwards, by great distress he was made to come before the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer at Westminster to answer as to why he had not made the service, and he had no testimony of this service except a letter of the earl of Hereford, whereby the petitioner was adjourned to the parliament of Carlisle to receive what would be ordained. The petitioner is so feeble and sick that he is not able to travel and requests that his little house not be damaged because of this and that the king will command and ordain something on this.[The transcript of the letter of the earl of Hereford mentioned in the petition is copied below, but is now almost entirely illegible].
Nature of endorsement
It is agreed by the treasurer and council that he should have an allowance of the service, notwithstanding that he did not come by the fifteen days.
Places mentioned
Abbotsbury, Dorset
Carlisle, [Cumberland]
Westminster
Carlisle, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Ralph de Gorges
[Humphrey] de Bohun, Earl of Hereford.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307 as the petitioner is basically excusing himself from attendance at the parliament held at Carlisle in January 1307.
