Nature of request
[Petition in two parts:]1) Mauhau requests the king's aid as he has been imprisoned for 10 years in the Tower of London as the cardinal has commanded before these hours that grace be done to him, and if it please that he be aided by the king's court to levy the £780 which is demanded from Mauhau for the accounts of the Mint, the which money the king's ministers who were of the Exchange detain wrongfully, whereof Mauhau ought to be discharged and the king paid seven years previously. And because Mauhau's enemies are of greater power, no one will plead for him, and because he is in prison he cannot plead himself so that his business is forgotten, he requests royal aid without long delay for the love of the cardinal.2) Mauhau requests that for love of the cardinal that in aid concerning the assays of the Mint that he be allowed his reasonable protections and that they be tried and determined without long delay by people who know about this business and who are not his enemies.

Note
The petition is dated to c. 1317-c. 1330 because the petition appears to be part of a file of Gascon petitions that date to this approximate date (SC 8/330/E979-E994). Few of the petitions have proved easily datable, only SC 8/330/E987 proving of any real use, referring to John de Weston as the former chamberlain of Scotland, and he ceased to hold that office in 1317. Several of the petitions seem to refer to war service, and it is unclear whether these are references to the war in the last years of Edward I or to that of St Sardos, hence the late date of c. 1330.
