Date

Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Bardney.
Addressees
Duke of Gloucester, keeper of England, and the lords of the present parliament.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent requests that the chancellor is granted power by authority of this parliament to grant to the supplicants a writ of subpoena directed to Barneby, Byan and the others under pain of £100 to appear before the Chancellor in Chancery at the octave of the purification of Our Lady next to answer for the wrongs and to receive what is ordained in this part in remedy. They have the freedom for their servants, officers and ministers to freely buy and sell in the town of Barton where they hold the church to their proper use, but Barneby and the others caused it to be proclaimed by the bellman that no-one was to buy or sell victuals to the abbot and convent to their great damage.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sent to the king's council and that the lords of the same council for the time being have power by the authority of the parliament held the same day of December in 8 Henry V to make to come before them Barneby and the others within written, by such process as pleases the lords, to answer the matters contained within the petition, and that the lords have power to hear, examine and determine the same matter and ordain and put such remedy to the supplicants as seems to the lords most suitable in the case.2) 18 February, 8 [Henry V] the abbot of Bardney appeared before the lords at Westminster and the matter was discussed and it was agreed between the parties that the abbot and convent not pursue the petition further.
Places mentioned
Bardney, [Lincolnshire]
Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire.
People mentioned
John Barneby the younger
John Byan the elder
Edmund Osteler
John Magernes

Note
The petition clearly dates to 1420 as the petition refers to events in early August, 7 Hen. V (1419), and the responses to the petition are both dated and one is the grant of parliamentary authority dated in parliament in December 8 Hen. V (1420) and the other to February 8 Hen. V (1421). The petition was, therefore, presented to the December parliament of 1420.
