Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Benton.
Name(s)
de Benton, Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Benton requests that false inquisitions that passed against him not be prejudicial against him, but that he reside in peace until the next coming of the king into those parts, or that a certain keeper willing to hold the inquisition in form of law and by loyal people before whom he will show that the inquisition was taken by false people against the form of their commission that they had. Berkeley and Blount were commissioned to enquire whether Benton had issued the victuals in his custody to the garrison of Berwick by false measure, and changed good victuals for bad and took money to do so, but the commission was subverted by the original instigators who gathered together with the garrison and procured an enquiry by the most false men of the garrison and town. The enquiry was held contrary to the terms of the commission and Benton was threatened so said nothing in his defence.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Maurice de Berkeleye (Berkeley), keeper of the town of Berwick
Steven le Blund (Blount).
Note
The petition is dated to 1316 as various commissions were made to enquire into the abuses made by the petitioners concerning the king's victuals in July 1315, and the petition clearly postdates these (CPR 1313-17, pp. 328, 403, 404-5). In addition, Bain also dated the petition to 1316 (Bain, vol. III::no. 522).
