SC 8/329/E968
Date
[c. 1291-c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Prioress and convent of Amesbury.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[Petition in three parts:]1) The prioress and convent request that they are able to increase their lands and tenements by £40 for the amendment of their estate from their own fee and from others notwithstanding the statute of mortmain as the house is entrusted with 28 women since the entry of the queen and the king's daughter.2) They request confirmation of the lands and tenements that they have purchased since the making of the charter of King Henry their founder.3) They request that it is commanded that in their new charter that it is indicated what liberties they can have and enjoy as these are contained only in general words in their old charter and the king's ministers will not accept them.
Nature of endorsement
[There are numerous struck-through responses.]1) They should inform of the value of the land and where it is, and they should sue for an answer.2) They should go to the treasurer and make a fine.3) Coram rege in the next parliament because it was not called in this.
Places mentioned
Amesbury, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
[Eleanor of Provence], Queen [of England] and mother of King Edward I
Mary [Plantagenet], daughter of King Edward I.
Note
The petition may date back as early as 1286 when the king granted the prioress and nuns numerous liberties in consideration of his daughter taking the veil there, but the hand seems to indicate a slightly later date, as clearly does the reference to the death of Eleanor of Provence, so a date of c. 1291-c. 1300 has been adopted (CChR 1257-1300, p. 331).
