Nature of request
[Petition in two parts:]1) The master and brothers request that they are able to sue for the obits that they have from their tenants throughout England in court Christian as they have done from time out of mind or that they have a writ that ordains that they can sue in the king's court as they are now prohibited from suing at court Christian by the statute of Westminster II.2) They request that if their demesne tenants wish to surrender their tenements, grant them in alms or for their sustenance that they be granted a writ of inquiry that they may enter the same as it is to nobody's disinheritance.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the first that they are impeded in court christian by a prohibition of the king, they should come to the justice who gives modifications of writs of prohibition and they should have from him what the quality of the business requires, upon the things that pertain to the king's forum they should come to the justices of the king and let them sue according to the laws and customs of the realm before them.2) To the second, they should come to the king and show which tenements, of what terms and tenants, and they should obtain an inquisition.

Note
The petition is speculatively dated to 1285-c. 1300 based in part on the hand, and because the petition refers to the Statute of Westminster II (1285). The hand of the petition suggests that the petition is well before the suppression of the Templars in England in 1312.
