Date
[c. 1298]
Description
Petitioners
Gilbert de Seynt Feye (St Fey).
Name(s)
de Seynt Feye (St Fey), Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Seynt Feye requests a writ to make the pays of Surrey come to enquire of the veracity of the testament of his father who died in Surrey, as his father died seised of a messuage in London and the Rowleys and others falsely forged his testament and enrolled it in the Guildhall in deceit of the court and in disinheritance of the petitioner, and it was ordered to the keeper of London that he enquire of this by the pays of London and Surrey but this did not happen because the keeper required a writ to make the pays of Surrey come.
Nature of endorsement
He should show the testimony to the mayor and sheriffs of London, and he should sue there according to the customs of the city.
Places mentioned
Surrey
London.
People mentioned
John de la Roule (Rowley)
Alice [de la Roule (Rowley)], wife of John de la Roule
Fanye [de la Henbrethe], widow of Piers de la Henbrethe
Henry de Rolling
Joan de Berkinge (Barking)
Keeper of London.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1298 because it makes mention of the keeper of London in the main body of the petition, and to the mayor and sheriffs of London in the response, so that the petition seems to date to around when the king restored London's liberties in 1298.
