Reference
SC 8/329/E934
Date
[c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Bury St Edmunds.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The abbot requests that the 'le seer' of the justices henceforth reside at Babwell outside the crosses of the banlieu [boundary] of St Edmund, and not elsewhere in the liberty of St Edmund, as in the past 'le seer' has resided at Cattishall which is distant from the town of Bury St Edmunds and inconvenient for justices, ministers and the people.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be done.
Places mentioned
Bury St Edmunds, [Suffolk]
Cattishall, [Suffolk]
Babwell, [Suffolk].
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1300 in part on the hand, and also because the petition makes reference to justices in eyre, and the last eyre to Suffolk was held in 1287 (Records of the General Eyre, pp. 167-8), and another petition from the same petitioner on the same matter is dated to 1305 on the basis of the inquisition apparently in response to it (SC 8/140/6998; C 143/52/13).
