Brothers of the hospital of St John outside the east gate of Oxford.

Nature of request
The brothers request that they are able to receive houses and rents that men of Oxford wish to devise in the town of Oxford for the love of God and the advancement of the house because the burgesses of the town are able to devise houses and rents as their chattels according to the usage of London. They also request that they are able to appropriate from their fee where it is held in chief from them.1)

Coram rege.2) They should come to Chancery and show what they have of the writ of inquisition.

The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1305-c. 1325 on the basis of the hand. The more substantial response is also in Latin, which seems to have been replaced by Anglo-Norman French by around 1322.
