Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/329/E929
Date
[c. 1295]
Description
Petitioners
William Devereus (Devereux).
Name(s)
Devereus (Devereux), William
Addressees
[King].
Nature of request
Devereus requests remedy and that he is prepared to aver on this matter where and when the king wishes as he was in the king's service and had his protection, but Acton came and broke down the gates to his park at Lyonshall and took his stock and chased it to Hereford where he detained it against gage and pledge for 30 marks that Devereus owed him, and for default of money he released 13 marks of rent of assize for the term of his life from the annual rent that Acton owed him to have his peace from further duress, because of which damages he is not able to pass with Lord Edmund, and for which he has suffered great damage.
Nature of endorsement
He should obtain justice for himself by writ of Chancery.
Places mentioned
Lyonshall, [Herefordshire]
Hereford, [Herefordshire].
People mentioned
John de Actone (Acton), late sheriff of Herefordshire
Edmund [of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster].
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1295 in part on the basis of the hand, but also on the reference made to Lord Edmund who seems very likely to be Edmund, earl of Lancaster, and the reference seems to be to his appointment as lieutenant in Aquitaine during 1295-1296.
