[c. 1290-c. 1298]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Marechal (Marshal).
Name(s)
de Marechal (Marshal), Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Marechal requests the king's aid as he is a tenant of the king of a house in London and built a forge there, and Long, who held another forge in the same street, and Rokesle came and because the other forge did not attract as many suitors they claimed to the archbishop and Breton that Marechal's forge was a nuisance to Holy Church and to London, though a subsequent inquisition found this not to be the case. Long and Rokesle then tried to have Marechal ousted from the house by having the archbishop excommunicate him, but he purchased a prohibition, and for a long time nothing happened, but now Long and Rokesle again try and make him leave the forge.
Nature of endorsement
He should obtain a new prohibition of the king just as it began. And afterwards he should be attached if it is necessary, and the king will do what ought to be done.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Richard le Long, marshal of the Archbishop
Simon de Rokesle
Archbishop [of Canterbury]
John le Bretoun (Breton), keeper of London
Henry de Nassenton, Dean of the Arches at London.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1290-c. 1298 as the petition makes mention of the keeper of London, and London was in the king's hand until 1298. The hand of the petition appears to date to the last decade of the thirteenth century.
