Date
[c. 1290-c. 1310]
Description
Petitioners
People of the vill of Droitwich.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Petition in three parts:]1) The people request remedy as Kirkby has added £5 to their farm of £84 which they are not accustomed to pay. They were granted their vill at farm by Henry III and it was assigned to Queen Eleanor in dower after the king's death.2) The people show that the abbot of Westminster has brought a plea against them before the justices of a toll [...] from his people, of which toll they found the king seised when they took the town from Kirkby and if the abbot takes this it will be to the damage of the king of £20, and the people will be unable to pay their farm without remedy.3) They further request remedy or they will not be able to pay their farm because an ancient debt from the time of Henry III is currently on demand, the debt is fully paid but by duress of the bailiffs they pay £10 from year to year.
Nature of endorsement
[On face:]1) Because they took the farm for the payment of a certain farm, the king cannot decrease their rent, nor does he have the counsel to do this at present.2) They should sue their plea to judgment, and if they are injured, the king will correct this as he ought to do by right.3) Let this be heard at the Exchequer, and let justice be done there. On dorse:]1) This petition is answered by the writing below.2) Robyr.
