Description
Petitioners
Christine de Lilleburn, wife of Alexander de Bonkhulle (Bunkle).
Name(s)
de Lilleburn, Christine
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Lilleburn requests that she can have dower in her late husband's lands and that the king will command his Scottish ministers that she is able to have her dower in the tenements that her husband held in Scotland and England, namely the barony of Bunkle, Newton and Uldale.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be asked of the better people in whose hands the lands are. Of the lands in England existing in the hands of the king, let her be assigned her dower by the escheator, and of the lands existing in the hands of others, she should obtain it for herself by writ of dower. Of the lands existing in Scotland she should sue towards the chancellor of Scotland.
Places mentioned
Scotland
Bonkhulle (Bunkle) barony, [Berwickshire, Scotland]
Newton Hall, [East Lothian, Scotland]
Uldale, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Alexander de Bonkhulle, late husband of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1295-c. 1304 on the basis of the hand, and because of the references to the petitioner's rights in Scottish lands, her husband certainly being dead by 1304 (CCR 1302-7, p.130).
