Reference
SC 8/329/E905
Date
[c. 1300-1304]
Description
Petitioners
Jahan (John) de Folborn' (Fulburne).
Name(s)
de Folborn' (Fulburne), Jahan (John)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[The petition is clearly part of a longer group of petitions from which this has been subsequently cut as the petition is not properly addressed].Folborn requests that a remedy is made of right or of grace as he pledged his armour to Sire Labre at Newcastle for 100s to be paid at a certain day in England or Ireland, at which day the sum was paid eight days before the term of expiry in Ireland to their company residing in Dublin, but the letter of the company did not get back to Newcastle on the day given for the debt, they sold his armour to Hawkswell, and they were unable to recover all of his armour from Hawkswell when the letter arrived.
Nature of endorsement
The bishop should make him have restoration.
Places mentioned
Lucca, [Italy]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Ireland
Dublin, [Ireland].
People mentioned
Sire Labre, chief of the company of Riccardi of Lucca
William de Haukeswel (Hawkwell).
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1300-1304. Fraser suggests 1303-1304 because the petitioner received protection while in the king's service in Scotland in 1303, but the petition seems likely to have been before this especially as Folborn is likely to have needed his armour in Scotland and he patently didn't have it here. The date, 1304, is the latest the petition can be as it is clear from Fraser's dating that the petitioner was dead by 1304 (Northumberland Petitions, pp. 87-88 (no.66); CCW 1244-1326, pp. 176, 178, 188; CPR 1301-7, p. 231). There are two other petitions possibly by the same petitioner. If the identification of the petitioner as the same individual in all three cases is correct, then there is a misdating apparent in one or more of the petitions (cf. dating of SC 8/178/8861 and SC 8/329/E906).
