Reference
SC 8/328/E890
Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
Christine de Mareis (Marish).
Name(s)
de Mareis (Marish), Christine
Nature of request
[Petition in two parts:]1) Mareis requests remedy as she is disturbed in her suit against Valence who holds the manors of Rathmore and Athlacca and which Mareis claims as her right by descent from her brother. Valence has a protection, though women cannot have protection as they cannot do the king service. She has pursued this matter before the king.2) She requests that the king's ministers are assigned to enquire of those malefactors who entered her park that she holds of the king to destroy her venison in contempt of the king and to her great damage.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the first, it is certified that Valence is in England so that her protection should cease, and the petitioner should sue against her if she considers it expedient.2) Concerning the second, she should have a writ in Chancery to the sheriff that he should enquire of this, and the malefactors should be attached.
Places mentioned
Rathmore, [County Kildare], Ireland
Athlacca, [County Limerick], Ireland
Harrow, [Middlesex]
St Albans, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Agnes de Valence
[Walter de Mareis (Marish)], brother of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1305 as it appears that it must date to a similar date as SC 8/9/421 which is in part on the same matter and is ascribed to the autumn parliament of 1305 (PROME, 1305, autumn parliament, appendix, evidence of business done at this parliament from chancery enrolments and elsewhere, no.40). In addition, a close roll entry seems to closely relate to this petition and dates 7 November 1305 (CCR 1302-7, pp.305-6).
