SC 8/328/E877
Date
[after. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of Holland.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Petition in four parts:]1) The commons request remedy as the sheriff proclaimed in Lincoln at Christmas that pollards and crockards were worth only a half penny, and Spalding was to make the same proclamation at the same time in all the market towns of his bailiwick, but he delayed the proclamation for eight days at the request of Fitz Alexander and others so that they could dispose of their pollards and crockards paying a halfpenny for a penny to the great damage and loss of the country.2) [The entry is damaged. Part of each line is lost by a whole in the centre of the parchment]. They request the king's grace for payment for corn taken by Spalding from the merchants in Holland [? at the command] of the sheriff which has still not been paid, the sheriff having been removed from office.3) They complain that the same William brought an acknowledged thief to the fair of Crowland and took five men and one woman [named] without warrant of the king or sheriff, but on his own authority, and imprisoned them, and also took several goods.4) They request remedy as Spalding troubles ... of his bailiwick at York in inquisitions outside of the county where they have land and rent of 40s. per annum.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning to the two first petitions, they should go to the Exchequer, and there let them be heard and the bailiffs called so that justice can be done.2) Concerning the others, the plaintiffs should acquire justice for themselves by writ of trespass and imprisonment if they wish.3) They petitioned elsewhere and did not prosecute.
