Reference
SC 8/328/E872
Date
[c. 1295-c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of St Augustine's, Canterbury.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of St Augustine's, Canterbury
Nature of request
The abbot requests that it is granted that he can purchase £20 of land and rent from his own fee for the sustenance of two priests singing for ever for all Christian souls in the [?] charnel house located in the cemetery of the abbey.
Nature of endorsement
They should specify the land and the donors, and go into Chancery and have a writ of inquisition.
Places mentioned
Kent
Canterbury, Kent.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1295-c. 1315 on the basis of the hand. The guard note suggests around 1311 based on a licence granted to the same house, but this is for the acquisition of £60 worth of land, and although it might have superseded this request, there is no evidence really to justify this.
