Date
[c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford.
Name(s)
de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Clare requests remedy so that he does not lose his tenant and is not disinherited as the lands and tenements that were his inheritance were taken into the late king's hand because his mother married Monthermer without licence, and afterwards, Mautravers made simple homage to the king's father for his lands that were of the earl's inheritance, to the earls disinheritance as he holds nothing of the king, and the relief is now on demand to the king's use.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
People mentioned
[Joan of Acre], Countess [of Gloucester] and mother of the petitioner
[Ralph] de Monthermer
John Mautravers.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1307 as the petition is clearly of Edward II's reign, and probably soon after the petitioner became earl after his mother's death in 1307.
