Reference
SC 8/327/E797
Date
[c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
William de Welleby Welby), son of William de Welby.
Name(s)
de Welleby Welby), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Welleby requests allowance of a certain debt of his father, and that he can have a writ of respite to the sheriff of Lincolnshire pending the allowance, and a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to make the allowance. The debt was incurred by Welleby's father receiving crockards and pollards [debased coinage] at the rate of one for one penny when he was keeper of Folkingham and Edenham and at the Exchequer it was allowed at the rate of two for one. The present king commanded the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to make allowance to Welleby's father but before he received it he died and the sum is now on demand upon him.
Nature of endorsement
Lincoln.
Places mentioned
Lincolnshire
Folkingham, Lincolnshire
Edenham, Lincolnshire.
People mentioned
William de Welleby (Welby), father of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1307 as it is clearly relatively early in Edward II's reign, the petition referring to a command by Edward II to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to make allowance to the petitioner's father, but the father dieing before this could be done, and it seems unlikely that the petitioner would have waited long to submit the petition.
